Genealogy ... but where I come from?

A GIS is a rather
computerized information system that allows the acquisition, storage, analysis, visualization, and the return of information from geographical data
(geo-referenced). According to the definition of Burrough (

1986) "GIS is composed of a set of tools
software to capture, store, extract, transform and display spatial data from the real world." It therefore constitutes a computer system capable of producing, managing and analyzing spatial data by associating each geographical feature one or more alphanumeric descriptions.
Among the programs that will show you what I love more is
gvSIG
.
gvSIG is a computer program for the management of geographic information (GIS, Geographic Information System) precisely map that is distributed under the GNU GPL. Allows you to handle vector and raster data and connect to the server with OGC map. This is one of the main features of gvSIG: the implementation of services OGC: WMS (Web Map Service), WCS (Web Coverage Service), WFS (Web Feature Service). gvSIG was born in 2003 when the Directorate of Infrastructure and Transport of the Valencian Community, decided to construct its own complete with SIT using Open Source and GNU GPL2. The project is funded by the European Union, European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The application is developed by the private company IVer Tecnologias de la informacion SA under the supervision of the University Jaume I, for development in accordance with the Open GIS Consortium standards. The program name is' stands for General Valencia, Geographic Information System.

Written in Java programming language and runs on Microsoft Windows operating systems, Linux and Mac OS X. Use libraries as stadard GIS Geotools or Java Topology Suite (JTS). It has a scripting language based on jython. Extensions can be implemented in Java using the classes of gvSIG.
gvSIG supports the following formats:
Vector: SHP, DXF, DWG, DGN, KML, GML
raster: ECW, MrSID, JPEG, JP2, TIFF, GeoTIFF, PNG, GIF.
Extensions
There are a number of extensions made by the development group and others that add additional functionality to the program. Customer ArcIMS: ArcIMS adds services for both images to geometry.
Sextante: Extremeño System of Territorial Analysis. Add raster and vector analysis tools for a total of more than 200 functions. (From Wikipedia)
